Read This Before Spending a Lot of Money on Film School!

By William Schwarz

Every passing year sees the completion and release of more new movies, and every year skilled people are required to make them. To fill this need, many good (and not so good) film schools have sprung up during the last few decades. Many successful artists and technicians are graduates from these schools.

But film school can be expensive or far away. Is getting a student loan and going into debt for several years a future filmmaker's best way to enter the business. Could there possibly be another way, and is film school even worth the expense?

Whether or not to seek training at a school is a decision that only the future filmmaker can make, but it's always best to weigh all of the options first.

It's with the hope that it will help future movie makers decide whether or not film school is the best route to take that I'm offering the following story about a friend of mine and how he got into the business. This friend travels around quite a bit so I haven't been able to ask him if it would be alright to use his real name, so I'll call him Paul.

Paul had an inheritance coming to him. His mother was put in charge of deciding how this money would be spent, with the stipulation that it had to be used to further his education. Naturally, she asked Paul what his career plans were.

He replied that he wanted to work in the movie industry and would like to go to film school. Employment in the motion picture business seemed fine to his mother, but she suggested another route to this goal.

What if she allowed him to use the money to produce a short movie of his own? It seemed to her that it would be the best way to learn how films are made.

This seemed to be a good idea to Paul, so he got to work. What he did first was to find a local special effects technician who would be willing to help him out. He located one who also just happens to be somebody I know. Let's call him John.

This is the deal Paul offered to John: John was to contact some of his special effects colleagues and together they would compile a list of effects that they had always wanted to create but had never had the opportunity to do. Paul would write a script that used as many of these effects as possible and a short film would be made from it that they would all work on together. The technicians wouldn't be paid for their work, but Paul would supply all of the necessary materials.

The effects crew enthusiastically agreed to this offer and the result was a very slick looking short film. Everybody involved had a lot of fun and Paul learned how movies are made. He also had a nice portfolio piece to show when looking for work in the future.

Of course there are a lot of people who went to film school and are doing very well, but Paul's story is certainly not unique. Many of the top professionals in the industry learned their skills by making their own films.

Stanley Kubrick, John Waters, Quentin Tarantino and especially, Robert Rodriguez are just a few of the many directors who have publicly stated that producing a film on your own is the best way to learn how it's done.

With the availability of affordable video equipment and helpful software, just about everybody has access to all of the resources they need to make independent films. They can even get their movies seen by uploading them to the internet.

Once again, there are many paths to success in the motion picture field and it is in the best interest of all who plan to enter it to consider as many of these paths as possible. Best of luck to all of you in the future!

SuperBad - Download SuperBad The Movie Online

By Daniel Spurgeon

It is not a bad idea to download SuperBad the movie online. While it is titled "SuperBad", it is not really a movie with a loose moral storyline. First released in theaters in 2007, the movie casts consist of Jonah Hill and Michael Cera.

When it first hit the US theaters, the movie grossed over 33 million dollars. A rating of 87% was given to SuperBad by the reviewers at Rotten Tomatoes, a popular critic site.

The story revolves around two buddies, Evan and Seth, who were also best friends. They were also both in high school and got into trouble. One of their friends had a fake ID and they were assaulted when they were trying to purchase alcohol. The police gave them a lift to the party they were supposed to go to. The officers then broke up the party and a chain reaction occurs on friendship.

One may ask if it is free to download Superbad online from its official website. Of course, the answer is no. What with all the existing copyright laws that we have, and of course the profit of moviemakers in terms of online technology, there is actually no movie producer who allows downloading online for free once it is released on the movie screen. Sure they will give you freebies, such a two or three-minute trailer, but the entire movie in itself is not free. But, you can always try looking for what we call preview copies which are typically released prior to theater screens.

One option to find such releases is to download Superbad online via the torrent clients. The second option is to use Peer-to-Peer software. These are all available on the web. But be prepared to wait a long time for the movie to be transferred onto your computer. Normally, it will take more than an hour.

Free download also abound in several formats, such as DIVX. Just words of caution, though, many P2Ps are gateways for computer virus transmissions. Sound judgment is advised.

The wisest choices is to buy the DVD or simply to use a paid movie service to download the full show. A rating of 87% definitely means that SuperBad is an excellent movie of certain substance.

You can spend $20 to $40 to buy the DVD and keep it in your private collection if you are a collector. However, if you want to save some money, go ahead and download Superbad online from paid membership services now.

Is Film School Worth the Time and Money?

By William Schwarz

Anybody who goes to the movies is aware of the huge number of new films produced each year, and anybody who has sat through the end credits of a current Hollywood blockbuster knows that a lot of skilled people are employed in their production. To learn these skills, many aspiring movie makers attend one of the many film schools that have come into being during recent decades. Some of these students have gone on to great success after graduation.

But there are a lot of people with plenty of desire and potential who don't have the financial resources to attend film school. Should these people give up on their dreams and get into some other line of work, or can the enter the business by some other means? Is it even possible that film school might not be the best route, anyway?

It's up to the individual enthusiast to decide whether or not film school is the best way to gain entry into the field, but it's always good to examine all of the available options.

It is with the intention of helping the movie makers of tomorrow to become of another possible route to their goals that I'm telling the following story. It's about a friend of mine and how he got his start in the film industry. I've lost track of this friend (he's very busy), so I haven't been able to get his permission to use his real name. Let's call him Paul.

Paul had an inheritance coming to him. His mother was put in charge of deciding how this money would be spent, with the stipulation that it had to be used to further his education. Naturally, she asked Paul what his career plans were.

His reply was that he hoped to get into the movie industry. In his estimation, film school would be the obvious way to get eventually enter the business. This career goal suited his mother just fine, but she had another idea about how Paul could learn the necessary skills.

What if she allowed him to use the money to produce a short movie of his own? It seemed to her that it would be the best way to learn how films are made.

Paul thought this was a good idea, so he went out in search of some help on this project. He found a local special effects technician who was interested in getting involved. I also happen to know this man. We can call him John.

Here's the deal that Paul and John made: John would go out and find a bunch of his fellow special effects people and ask them if there were any effects that they had always wanted to create but had never found a project that needed them. A list would be made of these effects and Paul would put together a screenplay that would call for as many of these effects as possible. They would then all collaborate on the film that would be made from this story. There wasn't enough money available to pay the technicians for their time, but Paul would pay for all of the building materials.

Everybody in the effects crew agreed to this plan and were very enthusiastic about the project. They all had lots of fun with the project and Paul learned how films are made. In the end he had a really slick looking short movie that he could use as an impressive portfolio piece when seeking work in the future.

Paul's story is by no means unique. Although there are a lot of successful people working in the film industry, there are also plenty of self taught filmmakers who are doing very well.

The Tiny Hero Of Piglets Big Movie Is Sure To Please

By Steve Collins

Walt Disney is great at creating characters that people cherish long beyond the boundaries of childhood. Among these are the memorable collection of characters who inhabit the Hundred Acre Wood. Disney's various Winnie the Pooh tales follow the plots of stories originally told by English author A.A. Milne in the 1920s.

Interestingly, many of Milne's characters were created after his son Christopher's collection of stuffed animals. Christopher's teddy bear, the muse for Winnie the Pooh, got his title from a real bear named Winnipeg whom the family liked to visit at the London Zoo. The "Pooh" bit came from the name of a swan. Milne's sweet stories are charmingly written and still enchant young audiences.

Winnie the Pooh and his friends have appeared in many Walt Disney animated features over the past four decades, even making it to theatres. One of the most favorite releases-and one with particular appeal to the youngest of audiences is Piglet's Big Movie.

Piglet's Big Movie lets Piglet blossom as the hero he really has been unobtrusively inhabiting through all the friends' adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood. The story does not begin triumphantly for Piglet however, as he is brushed aside as too little to be of any assistance help in his friends' hunt for honey. Shamed, diminutive Piglet disappears into the Hundred Acre Woods. In searching for him, the friends turn to Piglet's Book of Memories and understand what a huge role Piglet has played in all their adventures. Piglet learns that it is not a bad thing to be little. His contribution to the group is tremendous.

The film's message that being little does not prevent someone from doing remarkable things is encouraging to preschoolers, who often feel brushed aside as Piglet does. Children need to feel like they make a contribution, and Piglet's Big Movie does a great job of letting them see that little people matter a lot.
